mixed media and stitch on canvas,  36” x 64” (91 cm x 162.5 cm), 2008.

two separate texts are embroidered onto the found apron in slipping glimpser. two sentences by michael ignatieff from his 1993 novel scar tissue are embroidered on the waistband and ties, while on the body of the apron is a famous quote by artist willem de kooning.

“she had stopped painting.  when she looked at the canvases it was as if she was realizing what she had to abandon, certainly all of us, perhaps herself as well.”

— michael ignatieff

“you know, the real world, this so-called world, is just something you put up with like everybody else.  i’m in my element when i’m a little bit out of this world: then i’m in the real world –i’m on the beam.  because when i’m falling, i’m doing alright.   when i’m slipping, i say, “hey, this is interesting”  it’s when i’m standing upright that bothers me….as a matter of fact, i’m really slipping most of the time.  i’m like a slipping glimpser.”

— willem de kooning
