the mother the child

black and white photographs, cut up watercolour painting on paper, linen damask, sheer curtain, permanent marker, cotton threads. 54" x 40.5" (137cm  x 103 cm)  1988

Judy Martin’s father, Paul Johnson, maintained his own darkroom and documented both family and community members with numerous photographs. This quilt showcases a collection of some of the  photos he took and developed in combination with squares cut from a painting Judy made of winter tree branches.  Over this grid is layered sheer fabric with a line drawing of Judy holding her baby daughter.   Although the artist's identity for the outer world is one of a mother of four children, she will also always remain a child.

The Definitely Superior Gallery in Thunder Bay invited artists from NorthWestern Ontario to make quilts for an exhibition in February 1988.  Famed Canadian artist Joyce Wieland had been invited to speak at the opening.  Judy did not travel from Kenora to Thunder Bay for the show, but wrote her heroine a letter.  She received the following reply;

“Feb 17, 1988

Dear Judy Martin, I was much touched by your letter and thank you for it.  Your work also moved me and taught me about isolation.  It is extremely personal.  I loved the alternating brushstrokes and images and the veil overlay.  I hope that you continue with your work and will be in touch again.  Best wishes for you and your family.
Best wishes, Joyce.
