velvet journal : the rescuer
velvet journal : the rescuer (front)
a two-sided piece. velvet, taffeta, journal and magazine papers, 64” x 77” (162 cm x 195 cm), 2002.
using a technique called ‘english paper piecing’, Judy Martin made a two-sided textile using journal papers and women’s magazine pages. the papers were wrapped with silk and silk-like fabrics and velvet before being whip stitched together. the idea is that each of us, all the time, are two people: the person that we present to the outside world, and the more interesting one within, full of fantasies and thoughts.
the title comes from something the artist read in an essay by art critic lucy lippard. lippard said that women made quilts to rescue the mundane, the beautiful, and also the emotional moments from their lives.
